National Museum of Singapore

The National Museum of Singapore (新加坡国家博物院) is Singapore’s oldest museum with the youngest and most innovative soul. Designed to be the people’s museum, National Museum of Singapore prides itself on introducing cutting edge and varied ways of presenting history to redefine the conventional museum experience.

More than just a space for exhibitions and artefacts, the Museum will also distinguish itself through its challenging and vibrant festivals and events that will unleash hew creative possibilities in culture and heritage. This programming is support by a wide range of facilities and services including F&B, retail, Resource Centre, Gallery Theatre and the Public Sculpture Garden among others. With a rich history dating back to 1887, the National Museum building has officially open to the public on 7 December 2006 after its 3-year redevelopment.

The museum is divided into 2 main parts: Singapore History Gallery and Singapore Living Galleries. The Singapore Living Galleries itself is divided into 4 themes: Fashion, Food, Film & Wayang and Photography.

In Fashion gallery, you may view various costumes worn by women from different era. You may also view and understanding of the process on how various garments are made in the backroom.

In Film & Wayang gallery, you may view and watch the old films from three big screens, movies paraphernalia and listen to various movie theme songs. In the backroom, you will be amazed by the Chinese opera costumes and accessories worn by the opera actors.

In Food gallery, you may view and feel the vibrancy of Singapore’s street life from the display of food-related artifacts and sound installations, such as satay, chicken rice, etc. In the backroom, you may view and even sniff at the enticing aroma of spices displayed.

In Photography gallery, you may view some family portraits, albums and collection of old photographs. This gallery portray Singapore’s local life through photographic images and precious artifacts.

In Singapore History gallery, you may experience the major events in Singapore history as well as the personal stories of individuals who witnessed the history. This gallery adopts a story-telling approach  guided by an audio-visual companion handheld.
